Fr. Russell Becker, O.F.M.
What are you doing for Lent? This is a question we used to ask one another when we were young and asked by our priests and sisters about our Lenten observance. We gave things up: movies, candy, (as we got older, smoking or drinking), and we also took on some other penitential practices: stations of the cross, praying more frequently, trying to be nicer to those around us, being more generous, and giving to the poor. The purpose of all these things we do for Lent is to help us with the process of conversion.
For most of us, the tactics of conversion were more important than the real in-depth conversion that we are called to undertake.
So for this Lent really change! Listen to God’s call! Follow Jesus to Jerusalem and all that it means. and from there commit yourself to the mission of Jesus. Rejoice and embrace the good news of Easter: See I make all things new! Even you!
