As we get close to Christmas, we come face to face with the God who desperately wants to be close to us. This very consoling at Christmas, in times of difficulty and sadness. One of the interesting things about God being close is the real phenomenon of human religious experience to continually push God away. Humans over the course of history seem to prefer an all mighty, eternal God, powerful beyond all measures, sitting high above all things, watching over the vast universe, taking care of things, being in charge, and so busy. This has some interesting results.
The Lord is the earth and its fullness [Psalm 24,1], God is watching over everything, we are safe. But then there are those times when it seems God might be too busy for us, great when we are doing some things (maybe he didn’t see me) or bad when we are having tough times (maybe he’s too busy or doesn’t care). So what will it be: either here or there? neither here nor there? both here and there?
