Why can*t Johnny preach?

There is a fair amount of anxiety about the problem of literacy in our country which is expressed in the painful question: why can*t Johnny read? The answers to that question are not simple. Easily Johnny can be blamed, but that will not improve reading skills. Better reading courses are not enough, reading must be embraced as a value, not just a personal value but a family and community value. Studies show that there is significant improvement in reading skills when reading is an important part of an individual*s life and when families and other groups read together.
