Do Not Be Afraid

Fr. Russell Becker, OFM

I was reading the Bible and looking up some phrases and discovered that the expression: do not be afraid appears throughout the Bible from Genesis to the Book of Revelation over 60 times. Every time God appears, an angel appears and many times that Jesus spoke one of the first things said was Do not be afraid!.This message was given to individuals and to groups. In the Greek version of the Bible when it is spoken to an individual it is [me phobou] and when it is said to a group it is [me phobeisthe]. As they say, it is from the Greek, (please excus the lack of accents).
Fear is one of the most insidious feelings we have. Think for a while and try to remember some of the things that happen because of fear and how difficult it is to overcome our fears. But one of the things that is constantly revealed to us is that God is on our side and we should not be afraid. I think God continually speaks to us and tells us to have confidence and to not be afraid. To hear God’s voice should calm our fears and give us the courage for life that is ours.
