Abraham and Isaac
Fr. Russell Becker, O.F.M.
[To begin, take a little time and read Genesis 22, the story of Abraham being told to sacrifice Isaac. Write down any thoughts or questions.] This story is one of the most memorable and challenging stories in the Bible. There are many interpretations of the story. It demonstrates Abraham’s great faith in God; it is an example of how God tests us, and how Abraham responded to the test. The story ends with the angel announcing the great promise to Abraham: because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore `...all this because you obeyed my command [Genesis 22, 15-18]. Abraham certainly seemed to have passed the test. This text is placed before us to reflect on how devoted we are supposed to be to God, how we are to obey God’s commands and what sacrifice we should be willing to make for God.. Many of us recall this challenge to faithfulness. BUT, Scripture texts have many meanings and we can reflect another way.
