Jubilee Forever

Russell Becker, O.F.M.

Last year I was invited to a parish to do a parish retreat as they began their parish anniversary. The idea intrigued me and it gave me an opportunity to look at the biblical themes of Sabbath and Jubilee. Two themes that are intimately related to one another. Sabbath was given to us at creation when God rested after God “saw how good it was.” God asked humanity to observe the Sabbath so that humans could rest and also experience delight and the result of observing all those Sabbaths was to proclaim a Jubilee to live and share delight.
